The 74LS245 octal bus transceivers are designed for asynchronous two-way communication between data buses. The control function implementation minimizes external timing requirements. The device allows data transmission from the A Bus to the B Bus or from the B Bus to the A Bus depending upon the logic level at the direction control (DIR) input. The enable input (G) can be used to disable the device so that the buses are effectively isolated.

To minimize the possibility that two outputs will attempt to take a common bus to opposite logic levels, the output enable circuitry is designed such that the output disable times are shorter than the output enable times. This 3-STATE output feature means that n-bit (paralleled) data selectors with up to 258 sources can be implemented for data buses. It also permits the use of standard TTL registers for data retention throughout the system.
